Who runs the United Way?
Our United Way staff works in partnership with knowledgeable, well-trained volunteers who represent the diversity of our community to carry out the planning and implementation of United Way functions. Our volunteer network is a key reason why our administrative and fundraising costs are among the lowest of any charity, and why more of your contribution goes directly to help people.
How much of my gift is used for overhead?
Our administrative and fundraising costs, including staff salaries, represent only approximately 16 percent of contributions. That means at least 84 cents of every dollar you contribute goes to initiatives and programs that help people and build a stronger community.
Who is served by the United Way of Anderson County?
People throughout Anderson and Campbell Counties use United Way services. United Way agencies help create a stronger community by focusing on three impact areas:
- Providing Basic Human Needs
- Food & Shelter
- Health & Safety
- Mental Health
- Crisis Services
- Developing our Youth
- Youth Development Programs
- Helping Youth at Risk
- Enabling Aging with Honor
United Way addresses these needs in several ways:
- By investing your gift in programs that positively and measurably solve these needs
- By partnering with government, business, schools and nonprofits for far-reaching solutions that leverage resources and avoid duplication
What is the benefit of giving my gift through UWAC instead of directly to my favorite charity?
If you donate to a favorite charity, please continue to do so! By funding United Way we are able accomplish more than you can alone or through a single charity. Your gift is instantly combined with others' gifts to reach a broad range of programs and services to address community needs that no single agency could do alone. In many cases, these services address the “hidden” needs of our community. And United Way carefully screens and monitors the programs your gift supports to guarantee that your gift is being used wisely and responsibly.
How is my gift used?
Your gift addresses the many needs of our community in various ways:
- By investing your gift in programs that positively and measurably solve community needs. Your gift funds many programs at 32 nonprofit agencies serving Anderson & Campbell Counties.
- By partnering with government, business, schools and nonprofits for far-reaching solutions that leverage resources and avoid duplication.
Who decides which programs you fund?
Knowledgeable, well-trained volunteers from across our community - people like you - carefully screen and select the programs funded by your United Way contribution. After selection, these programs are closely monitored to make sure they produce positive, measurable results.
Our United Way staff facilitates this unique process but does NOT determine which programs are funded; the process is entirely community-driven.
How can I be sure that my contribution is used responsibly?
Our United Way is governed by community volunteers who set policy and oversee our financial practices. In addition, our financial statements are audited every year by an independent certified public accounting firm. These reports are available on our website.
